Nether Legion Baseball

Hello, Nether Baseball players and families.

Nether is following up on a previous message sent out to gauge interest in our summer Legion baseball program.  From the responses that we have received, it looks as though we will have enough interest to form at least 1 or even multiple teams in the 13/14 year old division, and at least 1 team in the 15/16 year old division.  We are still hoping to receive more interest in the 17-19 year old division.

This program is for players 13 years old and older and we want to hear (via registration when it opens up) from more interested families now to ensure success in 2023.  We will be meeting with the legion representatives at the end of January and would like to give them an indication of how many teams we will be entering into each division.  We can only do this if you register your player ASAP after registration opens up next week.  So please register as soon as you can!!

Nether baseball is gearing up to expand the number of American Legion teams we sponsor next summer, building on the success of our return this year after a Covid shutdown.

The 100-year-old program is steeped in tradition and offers a chance to play against top-quality teams from across DELCO, led by an independent paid coach and the cost is a fraction of independent travel and club teams.

This league is the logical next step for players that have aged out of our Nether Cal Ripen district teams or those looking to improve their skills and stay involved in baseball.

If your player would be interested in playing next summer, please register on the NPAA baseball site next week.

More info on the program below.  Thank you!!!

What is Legion baseball?

American Legion is a national baseball program that provides opportunities to play baseball after the school year ends and into the summer months every year for any players 13 years old to 19 years old.  Nether has a legion team called Nether Providence and we play in the Mainline Division.  That division is comprised of about 8 local teams (Mt. Airy, Aston, Springfield, Haverford, Narberth, Taney and Newtown).

What are the age groups?

Pennsylvania Legion baseball teams are broken up into 3 different age levels…

There is an opportunity for Senior Legion teams to move on to regionals and even the World Series!!

How much does it cost?

The legion program is significantly less expensive than the independent travel teams, especially when you consider how much baseball you are actually getting.  At under $600 per player, with paid coaching and getting in up to 16 games in the regular season plus an opportunity to play in the playoffs in an attempt to win a state championship (and beyond for Senior legion), it is well worth the cost!!

How are teams chosen and who is the coach?

Nether will be holding tryouts for Legion baseball in March or April of next year (dates TBD).  The nice thing about legion is that we would be able to enter multiple teams in any particular age group so cuts, while possible and probable, would hopefully be limited if we were to get enough interest to form multiple teams in any one age group.  Nether hires paid coaches to form and coach the legion teams but we do ask for parent participation to help the program run (more info on that to come).
